High above the valley of the River Bode, where the cliffs break into darkness and the wind arrives without warning, lies the Hexentanzplatz. By day it appears as a plateau with a calming view. By night – especially on the night from 30 April to 1 May – it becomes a place that is not merely seen, but experienced.

Old Harz legends tell that long before the place received its name, beings gathered here who did not belong solely to the human world. Upon this stone, it is said, the forces of nature, the spirits of the earth, and those later called witches would meet. Their dance was neither chaotic nor evil; it was the rhythm of transition, a ritual by which winter was released and spring was summoned. Thus the plateau came to be known as the Witches’ Dancing Ground – because the earth remembered the steps.

When the ancient cults were forbidden and sacred sites declared dangerous, the dance did not end. It merely became invisible. Folklore claims that on Walpurgis Night, witches and spirits still gather on the Hexentanzplatz, lighting fires no one can see and dancing in circles that cannot be measured. Those who venture too close hear drums with no source and whispers not born from a single voice.

In modern times, the testimonies have changed, but they have not disappeared.

A hiker from Magdeburg who filmed the plateau at night in 2011 later claimed that his camera captured something his eyes had not: rhythmic flashes of light in the mist, a repeating sound like feet striking stone, and a low, layered murmur, as though many voices were speaking the same prayer. He deleted the recording. Watching it, he said, gave him the unsettling sense that something on the other side of the image was moving toward him.

Night guards have spoken of shadows that do not behave like shadows – they follow no body, only a circle. Of the smell of smoke and herbs where there was no fire. Of moments of disorientation in which, for no clear reason, they felt compelled to turn in a circle, as though the ground itself were drawing them into a rhythm. One admitted that while standing beside the old sacrificial stone, he felt a hand on his shoulder – cold, but not threatening – and a deep sadness, as if he had been asked to stay.

Modern pagans, spiritual seekers, and particularly sensitive individuals speak of a circular energy surrounding the Hexentanzplatz. A woman from Quedlinburg reported that during meditation she lost all sense of time. Her watch stopped at exactly 00:17. When it started again, it read 01:04. She felt no fear, only a strong sense of having been “among others,” though she had seen no one.

According to old belief, the witches of the Hexentanzplatz are not beings of darkness. They are guardians of balance, those who remember how to dance when humans forget how to listen to the earth. Their dance is not a threat – it is a reminder. It is said that anyone who finds themselves on the plateau at the wrong time will not see the witches. They will become part of the dance. Not in body, but in memory – a whisper, a restlessness others can feel but cannot explain.

That is why, even today, when the mist hangs low and the moon appears too large and too close, some swear they can hear a soft drumming rising from the Hexentanzplatz. It does not come from the forest. It does not come from the past.

It comes from the earth, which still remembers how to dance – and which never stopped.
