The Story of the Castle and the Curse

Ehrenburg Castle was built in the early 12th century, most likely around 1120, when local nobles sought to control trade and the routes passing through the narrow valley of the Ehrbach. Built upon a steep rock, the castle commanded a strategic view over the surrounding forests and the paths leading toward the Moselle River.

During the Middle Ages, it was far more than a simple fortress. It served as a noble residence, a military stronghold, and a symbol of regional power. Its tall towers and stone walls overlooked the valley through numerous conflicts. One of the most notable was the Eltz Feud, in which local nobles clashed with the Archbishop of Trier. During that time, the castle became part of a network of alliances and defenses against the dominant authority of the Church.
Yet the true fate of the castle was sealed much later.

In 1689, during the devastating European conflict known as the Nine Years' War, French troops marched through the Moselle valley and began systematically destroying fortifications to prevent them from being used against France.
When they reached Ehrenburg, parts of its walls and towers were mined and blown apart.

According to local legend, a priest was staying in the small chapel within the castle and refused to abandon the place. As the soldiers began the destruction, he is said to have spoken words that later became part of the region’s folklore:
“Whoever destroys this house of stone shall never find peace among its shadows.”

That night, it is said, a heavy mist rose from the valley and enveloped the castle. Later, soldiers claimed they heard bells and footsteps echoing through empty corridors, even though most of the buildings had already been abandoned.
After that, Ehrenburg remained partially ruined for centuries, slowly surrendering to the surrounding forest.

Voices from the Tower
Serious restoration work at Ehrenburg Castle did not begin until 1991. Workers repaired the walls, reinforced the towers, and cleared old chambers that had been sealed for more than three hundred years.
It was during this time that strange stories began to circulate.

Some workers claimed that during the evening hours—when the rest of the crew had already left—they heard footsteps in the spiral tower. Others said they heard voices coming from empty rooms, quiet conversations whose words they could not understand.
One worker later described how, while working alone in the tower, he clearly heard footsteps following his own. Yet whenever he turned around, no one was there.
These accounts were never officially confirmed, but they gradually became part of the castle’s modern legend.

Today, Ehrenburg Castle has been restored and filled with life once again. Visitors come for its history, its medieval festivals, and the sweeping views over the valley.
But the castle has also embraced its darker reputation.
Every year, events such as ghost festivals, evenings of legends, and night tours are organized, during which guides tell old stories about curses, wars, and unexplained phenomena.
Some visitors claim that during these night tours they have heard the whisper of wind passing through ancient stone corridors. Others say they felt an unusual chill inside the tower, as if someone were watching them from the darkness.

Perhaps these are only stories that give the castle its soul.
Or perhaps, somewhere within the old tower of Ehrenburg, the voices of 1689 can still be heard.
