The Legend of The Salt Woman

At dusk, when shadows stretch across the old salt houses of Salzkotten, an elderly woman sometimes appears, dressed in gray and white. Her footsteps are soft, almost inaudible, and around her floats a faint scent of saltwater and damp wood. Villagers call her Die Salzfrau – believed to be the spirit of the first woman who died working in the saltworks, her life forever woven into the salt crystals.

It is said she appears before impending disasters: before fires that threaten the salt houses, or floods that might engulf the town. In her hands, she carries a vessel filled with salt, and the whispering wind around her sounds like a quiet warning. Children fear her pale eyes, but the elders know: she is the guardian of the town, cleansing the air, warding off disease, and protecting life and work in the saltworks.

Sometimes a haze of salt descends over the graduation towers, and people say the air becomes heavy and almost tangible. Those who venture close enough can see tiny salt crystals glimmering in the light, floating like invisible spirits, and feel the cold breath of Die Salzfrau. Her appearances are always mysterious and fleeting, like a shadow between the real world and the beyond.

According to some records in the local chronicles (allegedly in the “Chronik von Salzkotten,” 1832), every year around St. Anne’s Day (July 26), “the salty air thickens and everything is wrapped in whiteness” – which the villagers interpreted as a sign of her presence.
