The story goes that in Wewelsburg, aside from her—the guardian of the Empty Corner—the spirit of a knight, a sentinel from the early 17th century, occasionally appears.
He always manifests in the northern courtyard, near the tower that once protected the bishop’s treasury. Tall, clad in dark armor with indistinct edges, like a shadow that has learned to stand upright.
People say he appears only when something must be protected. And now comes the most unusual part: though they lived in different worlds, there exists a strange bond between them.
Legend holds that the two can appear simultaneously only on one kind of night: - When the moon is new, yet visible. - When the air is thick with moisture, yet without rain. - When the wind comes from three sides, leaving the fourth side—the southwest—completely still.
The elders say, “That night belongs to the invisible guardians.” On such nights, anyone on the hill may have the chance to witness something rarely remembered.
She always appears first. Slowly, like a reflection in water: a white silhouette at the edge of the Empty Corner, her hair gently moved by a wind only she can feel.
He appears only once she turns toward the castle, as if summoned. From the northern courtyard emerges a dark figure, tall and steady, stepping silently, as though walking across his own shadow.
It is said that only then do they stand in a straight line: She at the lost fourth corner, he at the opposite northern point, as if restoring the geometry of the castle that never truly existed. As if closing a circle.
What Happens Then?
Legend describes three phenomena, repeated by guides through the centuries:
A) The Castle Walls “Breathe” Not literally, but the stone seems to expand and contract. Sounds grow amplified, like a pulse. People say the castle temporarily connects with the hill beneath it, as if for a moment accepting its true, ancient architecture—one with four corners, not three.
B) The Light Changes The light becomes gray and diffused, like sunlight underwater. Shadows stretch and merge; She and the knight no longer have separate shadows, but one single, thin, elongated shadow connecting their positions. This is the most mystical moment.
C) The Descent of Calm They say that at this moment, a heavy, almost sacred calm is felt. It is not fear, nor unease. On the contrary, people describe it as: "As if everything is in its place. As if the world pauses for a moment, yet without danger."
Legend says they appear together because the Woman in White guards the Empty Corner—what the castle lacks. The Knight protects the North—the part that the castle possesses.
When they appear simultaneously, she brings the quiet side of the hill, and he brings the side of the castle and human order. Their presence temporarily unites what neither earth nor man has ever managed to connect: the unfinished corner and the fortress that refused it.
It is a night of harmony, the villagers say. "When the two meet, the hill and the castle breathe as one."
Older versions of the legend say that after their simultaneous appearance, certain changes occur: - A wall gives way without reason - An old tree withers overnight - Sounds in the basement grow louder for days - Stronger storms appear in the following week
Not as punishment, but as a release of tension. As if the place itself feels lighter when they “close the corner,” even for a moment.
In some versions of the legend, she turns toward him for an instant.
She cannot see his face, nor he hers—but their shadows merge. It is said that a wave of warmth spreads across the entire hill, like a breath no one expected.
This is the only moment when she is not alone, he is not a guard but a witness, and the castle, even if only once, becomes whole.
In the village, they say: "Two beings not of the same time, yet belonging to the same silence."
According to the legend, if you see them both, it is a great honor—but also a warning.
An honor—because it means you are permitted to witness a balance rarely revealed to the living. A warning—because it is said:
"If you see her, listen to the silence. If you see him, respect the boundaries. If you see both… then you are in a place where the world has more than one face. And you must leave slowly, without words."
No one has ever been harmed. Yet all who claim to have witnessed the encounter say the same:
"For some time afterward, at night, I heard two footsteps. One soft and light. The other heavy, like metal. Until I finally fell asleep."
