The White Woman of Böddeken

Not far from Büren, hidden in the dense forest near the abandoned Böddeken Abbey (founded in 837), a chilling legend tells of a spectral figure that sends shivers down the spines of travelers.

At the entrance to the so-called Valley of Peace, where an old war memorial with white crosses stands, shimmering eerily in the moonlight, a white lady is said to appear. According to legend, the surrounding estate once belonged to the noble von Mallinckrodt family, who had three young daughters. Tragically, all three children died at the age of four from a mysterious illness that left their skin pale as wax. Overwhelmed with grief, the mother—now bereft of her children and her husband, who had also died young—is said to have taken her own life.

Since those days, people whisper, the White Lady of Böddeken appears at night. She has been seen on the road in front of the old chapel, frantically waving to motorists. Some even claim that the ghostly figure has sat directly in the passenger seat, or even on a driver's lap, grabbing the steering wheel to warn of the dangerous curve.

Indeed, many accident marks can be found at this spot—long skid marks leading towards the ditch. Whether the white lady is a protective spirit warding off misfortune, or a restless soul seeking to frighten the living, remains a matter of debate. Some rationalize the legend, suggesting it is merely headlight glare reflecting off the chapel windows, creating the illusion of a ghost with the shadow of a cross. But secretly, even skeptics pull their coats a little tighter when driving through the valley at night.
