Wehrturm Bad Wünnenberg

The Wehrturm in Bad Wünnenberg is one of the town’s most iconic landmarks and the most significant surviving structure of the medieval defensive walls that once protected the Oberstadt — the upper town. Built in the 13th century, the tower served as a key part of the fortifications, guarding the town’s approaches and offering protection in turbulent times.

History was not kind to the tower. During the Great Fire of 1725, much of the upper town was destroyed, including large sections of the defensive walls. After the fire, many remaining fortifications were deliberately dismantled and the stones reused for the reconstruction of homes. As a result, the tower eventually lost its purpose and fell into decay.

By the 20th century, the Wehrturm stood as a quiet ruin — a fading memory of the past. Thanks to the dedication of local historians and cultural associations, the tower was extensively restored and has been open to the public again since 2001, now recognized as a protected cultural monument.

Today, this 20-metre tower is a vibrant historical site that:
- offers a viewing platform with beautiful panoramas of the Sintfeld region and the Aftetal valley
- houses a permanent exhibition about the town and the tower’s history
